TIES is a Program of

TIES Technical Elective Credit

UCSD Engineering Departments offer Technical Elective Credit for TIES courses:
ENG 100, Principles of Team Engineering (2 units) and
ENG 100L, Team Engineering Laboratory, (2 units).

Bioengineering Department:
All Majors: Students are eligible to receive 6 units of technical elective credit only when ENG 100 (2 units) is taken with 2 quarters of ENG100L (2 units) and subsequently for one more quarter for ENG100L for up to 8 units of technical elective credit. All technical elective credit may be fulfilled through the TIES program.

*Note: The Bioengineering majors currently require only 8 units of Technical Elective Credit.

Computer Science and Engineering Department:
B.S and B.A. Computer Science majors:
Students are eligible to receive 6 units of technical elective credit for completing a combination of ENG 100 (2 units) and ENG 100L (2 units). Students must complete 1 quarter of ENG 100 for 2 units, and 2 quarters of ENG 100L for a total of 4 units. With this combination you will get credit for 1 technical elective. To receive credit for 2 technical electives you must complete 1 more quarter of ENG 100L. This credit can be applied to fulfill your technical elective requirements.

B.S. Computer Engineering majors (CSE):
Students are eligible to receive 6 units of technical elective credit for completing a combination of ENG 100 (2 units) and ENG 100L (2 units). Students must complete 1 quarter of ENG 100 for 2 units, and 2 quarters of ENG 100L for a total of 4 units. With this combination you will get credit for 1 technical elective. To receive credit for 2 technical electives you must complete 1 more quarter of ENG 100L. This credit can be applied to fulfill your technical elective requirements.

B.S. Computer Science with a Specialization in Bioinformatics majors:
Students must petition department for technical elective credit.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Department:
All Majors: Students are eligible to receive 8 units of professional elective credit only when ENG100 (2 units) is taken with 3 quarters of ENG100L (2 units). Students are also eligible to receive 4 units of technical elective credit for 2 quarters of ENG100L (2 units). ENG100 cannot be used to fulfill technical elective credit.

B.S. Electrical Engineering, B.S. Engineering Physics & B.A. Electrical Engineering and Society:
Students are eligible to receive 12 units of professional elective credit only when ENG100 (2 units) is taken with 5 quarters of ENG100L (10 units). If students wish to receive technical elective credit for ENG100L, written approval is required prior to enrolling, and students should first consult with the ECE Advising office to determine level of technical content/appropriate number of units.

B.S Computer Engineering (ECE):
Students are eligible to receive 6 units of technical elective credit for completing a combination of ENG 100 (2 units) and ENG 100L (2 units). Students must complete 1 quarter of ENG 100 for 2 units, and 2 quarters of ENG 100L for a total of 4 units. With this combination you will get credit for 1 technical elective. To receive credit for 2 technical electives you must complete 1 more quarter of ENG 100L. This credit can be applied to fulfill your technical elective requirements.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department:
Chemical Engineering program, Mechanical, Engineering Science, and Environmental majors: Students are eligible to receive 4 units of technical elective credit for 2 quarters of ENG100L (2 units), haven taken ENG100 (2-units) as a pre-requisite.

*Note: The Aerospace major does not currently offer technical elective credit for either ENG100 or ENG100L.

Structural Engineering:
ENG 100 and two ENG 100L courses must be taken together for a total of 6 units to count as one technical elective. At least one ENG 100L must be a pre-approved SE project as determined by the department. TIES can only be used for a total of one TE.

Non-Engineering Majors:
We are currently in the process of articulating a plan for non- engineering TE credit. At this time, please contact your departments to petition for TE credit.
