TIES Program Course Structure
In preparation for TIES, all students must enroll in:
ENG 100: Principles of Team Engineering .
This 2-credit course is an introduction to the practice of engineering as a team-driven profession.
Weekly lectures expose students at all levels to the design process, verbal and written communication,
principles of teamwork, project management, ethics, legal issues, quality management, entrepreneurship, and community involvement.
In addition, students will be divided into groups of 5-10 to participate in a "paper project". Each team will be paired with a
non-profit organization in the community and will design a plan to help this organization solve a technical problem.
This is designed to prepare students for participation in the actual projects in ENG100L, described below.
ENG 100 is a 2-hour weekly lecture course, with both faculty and outside speakers. It is expected to have 4 hours of outside preparation. There will be a final exam.
ENG 100 will be offered each quarter.
In addition, for continuing credit, students are assigned to TIES project to work on and register for 2 credits per quarter up to six quarters in:
ENG 100L: Team Engineering Laboratory under a faculty advisor.
ENG 100L is the design lab component for TIES projects available to freshman, sophomore, juniors and seniors. All levels of students are able to sign up for multiple quarters. This course is designed to provide multidisciplinary, long-term project experience for vertically integrated teams of students from freshman to seniors. Students are encouraged to participate over multiple quarters until project completion or as needed to fulfill their technical elective or senior design requirements.
ENG 100L has 1 hour of lecture weekly, and 2 hours of team lab meeting. It is expected to have 3 hours of outside preparation. Grades are based on academic milestones such as design reviews, individual design notebooks, reports, presentations, peer and self evaluations, and feedback from the community client. Students can expect to make a presentation or participate in a design review during 10th week.
ENG 100L will be offered each quarter.
