This marks the completion of the first successful sensor calibration. The experienced gained will be incorporated into the final sensor calibration manual. 11/09/2007: Presented midterm presentation to TIES class today. The presentation can be viewed here. 6/15/2007: A short video documenting the TIES program can be viewed by clicking here. Various team members from Environmental Monitoring are interviewed so be sure to give it a look! 6/09/07: Earlier today, the Environmental Monitoring Team gave their final presentation for the quarter to Robin Rierdan at Lakeside. The presentation can be downloaded for viewing in the Spring 2007 Documents section. Regarding deployment, an issue with the battery onboard the monitoring station has pushed back the expected date to the week of June 17th. 6/01/07: The environmental monitoring team is gearing up for deployment on Friday, June 8th. Team members have been working hard to resolve hardware and software issues, and are making excellent progress. The monitoring station is currently sitting atop the Cal-IT^2 roof, undergoing continuous testing and analysis. In addition, a number of new pictures showing our team members hard at work have been added to the Spring 2007 Pictures section of the website. 5/22/07: The poster created for the EPICS conference has been uploaded to the Spring 2007 Documents section of the website. 5/16/07: CAD models of the final monitoring station design have been added to the "Design" portion of the website. There are a range of views that give an interesting look at the completed device. Work is also underway on the display poster that will be presented at EPICS. Engineering Projects in Community Service highlights projects undertaken by universities across the nation. Our poster will highlight the various aspects of our monitoring station and its mission, and will be viewable on the first floor of the CSE building on Wednesday, May 23, from 2:30-3:30PM. 5/08/07: On Saturday, Lakeside administration was treated to a mid-quarter presentation on behalf of the Environmental Monitoring team. If you would like to view the presentation, please navigate to the Spring 2007 documents section of the website. The minutes from last week's team meeting have been added, as well. 5/03/07: Pictures from the monitoring station recovery on April 29th have been added. Click on Pictures > Spring 2007 in the navigation bar to the right. A calendar of events and upcoming important dates have also been added to the Spring 2007 documents section of the website. 4/29/07: The monitoring station was successfully recovered from Lakeside. The problems have been traced to a faulty data-logger. Burn marks were found inside of the device, and the hardware team suspects that a voltage problem might be the cause of this. We are awaiting a replacement data-logger or other solution before redeployment. In the meantime, other subteams are hard at work making improvements to the monitoring station's structural and software interface designs. 4/12/07: Spring quarter is two weeks underway and the Environmental Monitoring team is getting ready for a monitoring station recovery and service this Saturday. We had issues in obtaining data from the sensors after deploying at the end of last quarter, and the possible causes have been narrowed down. Other improvements to the monitoring station are being evaluated and we expect the next eight weeks will be quite interesting. The first set of meeting minutes have been uploaded, with more to follow. The tentative progress chart has been added to the "Spring 07" document section of the website, which you are more than welcome to examine. 3/17/07: The Environmental Monitoring team gave the last presentation of the quarter at Lakeside Conservancy today. You can view it by clicking here. Other documents pertaining to the Environmental Monitoring Project can be found in the Documents section of the website. 3/16/07: The Lakeside deployment occurred today, and the monitoring station is now permanently situated in its designated area. The team put in a fantastic effort deploying the anchors and attaching the monitoring station, but there were issues in getting the sensors to properly transmit data. We hope to resolve this soon and make further improvements during next quarter. Pictures will be posted in the next few days. 3/6/07: Team meeting minutes have been updated. 3/4/07: Our second pool test commenced on Saturday, March 3rd at 4PM. Instead of testing the anchor system, we opted to deploy the sensors and try to wirelessly capture data from them. Four of the five sensors were dropped approximately 14 feet down and were all operating correctly, providing data to a nearby laptop. There is a slight concern over the balance of the monitoring station itself, and hopefully this can be remedied before final deployment. Pictures will be posted in the coming week. 2/24/07:
The
team is gearing up for the second pool test of the quarter. This will be the
last chance to test the monitoring station system in a large body of water,
prior to deployment at Lakeside. Best of luck, everyone! 2/17/07: Water testing in the
Canyonview East Pool was a success! Team members managed to deploy the anchor
system and monitoring station without incident. The primary anchors worked
very well, but more consideration needs to be given to the anchor-buddies
which provide tension on the rope system. 1/28/07: This quarter's water quality data can now be viewed on Google. Click Google Spreadsheet. Thanks to WQ team. -DY 1/12/07: First meeting of Winter 2007 quarter was held today. New member were introduced, and team responsibilities were assigned. Our new Team Lead of the quarter is Jason Najarro. We're off to a great start. -DY 12/2/06: The final presentation of the Fall 2006 quarter was held at Lakeside. It was a huge success. Robin Rierdan was very excited to see what we have accomplished for the quarter. The monitoring station was deployed at Lakeside, which was a goal we had set in the beginning of the quarter. Some photos have been upload. -DY 12/1/06: Final Presentation Draft 3 posted. -DY 12/1/06: The final presentation of the quarter will be held in Lakeside at 9:00am Saturday, December 2nd. The monitoring station will be deployed into the lake. -DY 12/1/06: The poster presentation will be held today from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the CMRR Auditorium. It is mandatory for all members of EM to attend, and please wear business causal attire. To preview the poster click here. 11/29/06: Today was testing day for the monitoring station. In a covert operation involving several members of the team climbing over a locked community pool, the monitoring station was successfully deployed into a pool. The monitoring station did not sink (which was expected) and did not tip from a 160lb point load (Scott). However, Scott did manage to flip it over with a good amount of effort, but keep in mind that there were no anchors and no hardware weight to keep it down. Thank you Scott for having such a brave soul jumping into the pool at night in 50ish degrees. -DY 11/28/06: After spending many long hard hours working in Tim's garage, the monitoring station is near completion. The superstructure of the monitoring station is complete. The only things needed now are securing the hardware inside the pelican case, and constructing conduits and/or junction box to protect the sensors. These tasks may have to wait til next quarter as this quarter is quickly coming to an end. -DY 11/27/06: Water quality data up to November 18 has been posted. -DY 11/14/06: A poster session will be held tomorrow, November 15 in the TIES Lab (EBUI-5510) from 12:00 to 1:00pm. Come and learn how to give a spectacular poster presentation. -DY 11/12/06: Spending plan has been revised. -DY 11/07/06: This quarter's progress has been continuing steadily. For complete progress updates check out the weekly meeting minutes. 10/31/06: A spending plan has been documented. -DY 10/20/06: The mid-quarter presentation was held in today's ENG100L lecture. -DY 10/17/06: The client proposal presentation was held today. We received feedback, had questions answered, and answered questions. -DY 10/10/06: A progress update was given by each subteam at meeting. Structural team has proposed a monitoring station design in which a water-tight enclosure with the hardware will be mounted on. The benefit in having a monitoring station design is its isolated structure, which requires no terrain layout and better prevent vandalism. Hardware team has trouble-shot the data logger, and all sensors work but need calibrating. User interface team has a selected a free database, and will check its compatibility with the existing server. Water quality team is working on the possibility of a new site, which will be located much closer to homes. In doing so, we can see what kind of water runoff is created by the homes in the neighborhood. (For a complete progress update see meeting minutes 10/10/06.) -DY 9/30/06: As a whole team, we had our first site visit of the quarter. Site 5 has completely dried up. In replacement, we have chosen site 1 to be our new site. A new structural design will be needed. -DY 9/26/06: First meeting of the Fall '06 quarter. There are many new and returning members. A quick introduction to the project and update of progress was given. There is much work in the plans, including the possibility of a completely new structural design. This quarter's team lead is Scott Maghy. As for subteams, Tim Chow, Jason Najarro, Samuel Hwang, and Tony Aung are our leads for structural, user interface, water quality, and hardware/software respectively. (See complete Fall06 roster) -DY 6/4/06: The team conducted the final field test of the quarter, which was very successful. The charge regulator has finally been replaced and it integrated seamlessly with the solar panel and battery. The team was also able to establish a wireless signal between the Lakeside offices and Channel Road Bridge. 5/23/06: Saturday May 20th was River Day at Lakeside and a busy day for the EM team. Members of the team manned a poster booth to showcase our project's progress to the community. At the same time the team carried out the second field test of the quarter. While the test was mosty succesful, further debugging will need to be done with the pH sensor and wireless modems. Also over the weekend, past Water Quality Lead Fabiola Hatley presented research based on her work from her summer 2005 internship at the Undergraduate Research Conference at UCSD. Fabiola's presentation is now available online. -JN 3/17/06: Final Poster PDF is posted. Successful Lakeside site visit on March 11th, where water quality data was collected both manually and through the use of the data logger system, powered by the power system designed. Solar panel configuration was not able to be utilized as weather was not providing. A full system test is planned for the beginning of spring quarter. - JT 3/12/06: Team Members page updated. - JT 3/05/06: Team Members page updated. - JT 2/28/06: The following are available on the Documents page: 2/21/06 Minutes, WQ Minutes, WQ Data, and Spend Plan. - JT 2/22/06: 2/14/06 Meeting Minutes are available on the Documents page. - JT 2/19/06: The "Winter 06" Documents page has been created. It is also the largest team ever fielded by Environmental Monitoring with a total of 14 members. The current roster is now available online. We expect to continue towards our goal of deploying the prototype by spring quarter. - SJB 12/2/05: As we arrive into December, that means the quarter is quickly coming to an end. Today was the poster presentation for everyone to see what the status is of our project. We also presented our project to our community client for them to see what the status is of our project. Both presentations went well. Today also marked the last day our current group of student will meet. Next quarter will start in early January and that means a new batch of students will continue where the current group left off. -RG 11/21/05: Four of the sensors have been calibrated. We are currently trying to program the data logger. - RG 10/13/05: Website has been renovated to support frames. - SJB 9/7/05: The final intern summer presentations to the client took place on Friday, Sept. 2nd. The presentation went well, with the client offering good feedback. Also that day the client chose a Global Water Instrumentation sensor package including industrial level pH and DO sensors (details will be outlined in continuation report). Following the meeting, the GWI order was placed. Various summer documents have been uploaded, including the final manual water quality data for the summer. Visit the documents page for more details. The Summer 2005 Continuation report will be released soon. Finally, we (finally) began to receive some of our National Instruments order. Received were two omni-directional antennae and the LabVIEW Real Time Module. 8/8: The first issue of the TIES newsletter has been released. 7/30/05: The project is currently running smoothly under the guidance of Stephen Bak and Fabiola Hatley, the two summer interns. Chemical testing has increased to twice a week for the summer. Datalogger parts were ordered earlier this week from National Instruments. Due to the amount of development time required, the SIO datalogger was rejected. Also this week we checked in with Lakeside representatives to present our mid-summer status. We are continuing research on the optimal choices for sensors. We anticipate sensors to be ordered within the next two weeks. Lakeside and the team in the local news
