Team members are evaluated based on their individual contributions and on the overall performance
of the team. In order to provide formal feedback during the quarter, a complete dry run of the
grading process is conducted at the middle of the quarter. The same procedures are to be used for
both the dry-run grading and the final grading. Some components of the grading process are also
used to document student outcomes for engineering accreditation (ABET). The ABET documentation
is required for students who are using TIES to fulfill their senior design requirement.
Overall objectives for grading across the TIES program include:
- Consistency that ensures high standards and equitable evaluation of students;
- Mutual understanding between advisors and students; and
- Documentation that supports the use of TIES credit in students' plans of study
Inputs to the team grade:
- Written reports/proposals
- Presentations/posters
- Weekly reports
- Project demonstrations
- Feedback from the community client
- Observations of advisors and TAs
Inputs to the student's grade:
- Team and project grade
- Student's design notebook
- Weekly reports
- Peer evaluation forms
- Student's self assessment form
- Feedback from community client (N/A for all students)
- Observations of advisors and TAs
- Lecture/skills session attendance record
Grading infrastructure:
- Summary of course objectives and student outcomes (for ABET)
- TIES evaluation matrix/rubric
For the final grades, the advisor is to assign a letter grade to the overall team and to each student.
Please compile all of your grades and comments in a single master file and mail this file to ties@soe.ucsd.edu.
By editing the master file, send email to each student that includes:
- Team grade plus feedback to the team
- Student's grade and individual feedback, summarizing the student's strengths and weaknesses
