The I2P competition is a social entrepreneurship competition allowing Teams in Engineeirng Service (TIES) teams to actively learn about the market, product feasibility, and sustainability of their team's project. ALL TIES TEAMS are encouraged to submit proposals. This is NOT a business plan competition, it serves as a stepping stone to obtain a patent on a design of one of our many social projects in the local San Diego community.

Overview
The TIES local I2P competitions are the first social entrepreneurship initative at UCSD. Through successful partnerships involving the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) National Program, The EPICS Entrepreneurship Initiative (EEI), the UCSD Von Leibig Center, and TIES team members interested in entrepreneurship, we are launching our second Idea-2-Product Competition. Our goals include:

  • Creating opportunities for TIES students to learn about entrepreneurship;
  • Enabling TIES teams and their project partners to identify, protect, develop, and benefit from the intellectual property they create together; and
  • Spreading the benefits of products developed by TIES team by commercialization.

This competition provides a natural pathway for undergraduate students to learn about and experience entrepreneurship – via the projects that they develop for their partners in the community. They first design a product or service that fills a known need in their local community and then explore other markets for it. They must identify the broader social need their product addresses, the uniqueness of their product relative to others, the best way to protect the intellectual property they have created, and the most promising first market for their product.

The judges in these competitions compare the product-feasibility plans of the TIES teams that have entered to determine those that are most likely to be successful. This is very similar to the evaluation process used by the venture capital community and provides our students with a very valuable experience they can draw upon throughout their careers.

Q. What is Social Entrepreneurship?

A. Social Entrepreneurship is the process that creates change, both economic and social, through leadership and the application of business practices while maintaining the focus on the organization's mission. In third world countries, social entrepreneurship focuses on creating income opportunities for many people held in the grips of poverty. Within developed nations, Social Entrepreneurship helps non-profit organizations explore income generating businesses that focus on the double bottom line of both the financial and social returns on their investment.

Q. Why do you have an Idea to Product Competition for Social Entrepreneurship?

A. The Idea to Product Competition is a product feasibility competition created to provide the students with the opportunity to identify the commercialization potential of their project. It is NOT a business plan competition. In addition to identifying their technology, students are asked to address the uniqueness of their product and its market potential. The focus of this competition is on the products technology and the prototype or conceptual plan and how it fits the mission of the project partner.
